The Art of Tapping into a Deeper Wisdom

“The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear.” – Rumi

Have you ever tried desperately to remember a name, a date, or an inspiring idea, only to find it slipping further away the harder you strain for it?
It’s a frustratingly common experience. In a world that tells us to push harder, hustle, and force solutions, we often apply that same aggressive effort to our own minds. But trying to force inspiration or memory is like shaking a muddy cup of water to make it clear—it only creates more chaos.
According to esoteric teacher Paul Foster Case, the secret to perfect recollection and deep insight isn’t effort at all. It’s silence.
In the Tarot, this wisdom is embodied by the High Priestess. She sits in perfect stillness and passivity, allowing information to rise naturally to the surface of her mind. She reminds us that we don’t always need to go hunting for answers; sometimes, we just need to stop blocking them from coming to us.
The Two Sides of Inner Wisdom

The High Priestess holds a scroll of universal knowledge, and her energy has two beautiful, practical aspects that we can apply to our everyday lives:

1. Expanding Beyond Ourselves
The first aspect is about tapping into a broader, universal memory. It’s the feeling of receiving flashes of intuition, a creative breakthrough, or a sense of deep connection to something much larger than ourselves across time and space.

2. Looking Within
The second aspect is deeply personal: understanding our own subconscious minds. It’s about looking inward to discover why we react to certain situations, what triggers us, and how our internal wiring dictates our daily lives. By understanding this hidden part of ourselves, we can gently rewire negative subconscious beliefs, align with our true desires, and live a more fulfilled, peaceful life.

The Pillars of the Mind: 5 Laws of How We Connect Thoughts
In traditional imagery, the High Priestess sits between two pillars—one dark, one light. They symbolize the polarity of our conscious and subconscious minds.
To bridge the gap between these two worlds, we have to quiet our nervous systems and enter a calm, receptive state. Case suggested that these pillars represent five natural "Laws of Association" that dictate how our minds store and retrieve information. When we understand them, we can stop fighting our minds and start working with them.
  • Similarity: Our minds naturally group similar things together. When we see a pattern in our lives, our brain links it to past, identical patterns.
  • Contrast: We understand things by their opposites. We appreciate light because we know darkness; we recognize peace because we have survived chaos.
  • Recency: We recall what we’ve experienced most recently with the least effort. Whatever is fresh in our minds sits right at the top.
  • Repetition: What we do frequently becomes second nature. This can work against us or for us. If we experience failure a few times and constantly repeat the story of "I am a failure" to ourselves, our subconscious solidifies that identity. Conversely, if we repeatedly practice sitting in stillness and listening to our intuition, that intuitive muscle becomes incredibly sharp and accurate.
  • Intensity: We vividly remember experiences that demand our full, emotional attention. This is why childhood memories can feel sharper than what we did yesterday. When we live mindfully and give our full presence to the moment, life stops feeling like a hazy blur.

Moving Beyond the Analytical

You don’t need to be a scholar, a Tarot expert, or a psychologist to benefit from these truths. While the inner workings of the mind can seem complex, the practical application is beautifully simple:

Relax, be still, and observe.

The next time you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from your inner guidance, try to step away from the analytical, striving mind. Stop forcing the answer. Shift your state of mind by taking a few deep breaths, slowing down your brainwaves, and honoring the natural quiet within you.
Are you ready to quiet the noise and tap into your own deeper wisdom? Start by simply sitting in stillness today—and seeing what rises to the surface.
